Poetry Rationale

Poetry Rationale and Proposal Statement
My objective for my poetry creative presentation will be to present a poster which has pictures that illustrate the poem. I plan to draw a picture for each poem that expresses the theme of each poem, and place them on a poster. On each picture I will write the poem itself so that the reader can both read the poem and examine the picture at the same time. I will choose this method because mainly I want the reader’s to clearly understand the poem fully. Even if I am not present to explain my poem, my illustrations will make it easier for readers to understand what my poem is saying.
I think the main difficulty is the drawing portion itself. I am not an artist, and drawing is one of many things that I find it hard to do. The main reason I am drawing a picture is to make my poem clearer for the readers. However, if I draw a horrible picture, an picture that is not related to the theme, and especially an picture that readers find it difficult to see what it is, then it will fail the objective of making a drawing poster. In order to prevent this, I will draw the picture with a pencil first so that when I make an mistake, I will be able to fix it right away. Also the important portion will be time management. Since I can’t draw a clear picture fast, I will have to start early and use my time wisely.
New aspects I discovered about poetry was that their was a variety of different poems. Before I thought even though there style might be different, I thought they had similar structure. However, I learned that theres many ways to write an poem, and each poem had specific traits. The fact that there were so many ways to write a poem made me more interested in poetry. It was like going into a buffe and finding all types of food. Before I hated poetry itself, but now I realize theres other ways to write a poem, and that made me motivated to write poems. Creativity is a great way to express your learning because each person has a unique imagination and a unique way to express what they learned.

Elegy poem

Mother
- Daniel Yang

The sadness do not pass
The tears do not drop.
For even though I know,
That I just lost something special.

Tis?is a rainy day,
The perfect day for an funeral.
Yet I cannot believe,
That all of this was happening.

Oh how wonderful was she
As a mother, a friend, a mentor
For she always stood by me
And did not let go of my hand.

At first I am in doubt,
For maybe its just a dream,
Until I feel the coldness in the hand
That was once the warm hand of my mothers

And I stand there in shock.
Not caring of the sound around me
But dive into a deep pool of sadness
As I watch her being buried down into nature.

What would I have done without her
What would I do without her.
I am afraid of the future
Where I won뭪 have her at my side.

Because of her I lived a meaningful life
Because of her I have succeed in the society
Because of her I was able to live
And because of her I am now in great loss.

The darkness do not disappear.
The moaning do not die.
For we all knew,
That we had just lost something special.

Free Verse BY Daniel Yang

In the cafeteria

My friend in the cafeteria
eating hamburgers and fries
with all those bacteria and germs floating around.

Then comes me, the smart one
I laugh at him and say, “YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING!”
it started with a joke, and ended with violence.

My friend got angry at me
saying I misunderstood everything.
Then he asked other friends for help.

My other evil friends agreed with my friend,
until he started using violence.
V-I-O-L-E-N-C-E VIOLENCE.

He started grabbing my injured wrist, and shook it.
My other friends laughed hard, and so did I...
in pain of course.

He would not stop there. He went mad as a mad cow,
trying to destroy me.
All through that experience I laughed alot.

I hate my friend
I love my friend
Don’t get angry at me after reading this, my friend.

“The Waking” - Theodore Roethke

“The Waking” - Theodore Roethke
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me, so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

I think the theme of the poem relates to the nature of the world and appreciating life."Light takes the Tree" may refer to darkness when the sun sets (as fits with your interpretation. The line about the worm climbing the stair refers to a struggle against great odds.I think the poet is saying to take your time in life and to learn how to live your life as you go.

Sonnet

Shakespearean sonnet 63

Against my love shall be as I am now
With Time's injurious hand crushed and o'erworn,
When hours have drained his blood and filled his brow
With lines and wrinkles, when his youthful morn
Hath travelled on to age's steepy night,
And all those beauties whereof now he's king
Are vanishing, or vanished out of sight,
Stealing away the treasure of his spring:
For such a time do I now fortify
Against confounding age's cruel knife,
That he shall never cut from memory
My sweet love's beauty, though my lover's life.
His beauty shall in these black lines be seen,
And they shall live, and he in them still green.

This poem talks about how he will be forever young because of love. That is why I have a put a picture that describes love as forever. The rhyme scheme of this poem is a-b-a-b-c-d-c-d-a-b-c-b-d-d. It has a total of 14 lines.

BALLAD

403. The Soldier’s Return: A Ballad by Robert Burns
WHEN wild war’s deadly blast was blawn,
And gentle peace returning,
Wi’ mony a sweet babe fatherless,
And mony a widow mourning;
I left the lines and tented field,
Where lang I’d been a lodger,
My humble knapsack a’ my wealth,
A poor and honest sodger.

A leal, light heart was in my breast,
My hand unstain’d wi’ plunder;
And for fair Scotia hame again,
I cheery on did wander:
I thought upon the banks o’ Coil,
I thought upon my Nancy,
I thought upon the witching smile
That caught my youthful fancy.

At length I reach’d the bonie glen,
Where early life I sported;
I pass’d the mill and trysting thorn,
Where Nancy aft I courted:
Wha spied I but my ain dear maid,
Down by her mother’s dwelling!
And turn’d me round to hide the flood
That in my een was swelling.

Wi’ alter’d voice, quoth I, “Sweet lass,
Sweet as yon hawthorn’s blossom,
O! happy, happy may he be,
That’s dearest to thy bosom:
My purse is light, I’ve far to gang,
And fain would be thy lodger;
I’ve serv’d my king and country lang—
Take pity on a sodger.”

Sae wistfully she gaz’d on me,
And lovelier was than ever;
Quo’ she, “A sodger ance I lo’ed,
Forget him shall I never:
Our humble cot, and hamely fare,
Ye freely shall partake it;
That gallant badge-the dear cockade,
Ye’re welcome for the sake o’t.”

She gaz’d—she redden’d like a rose—
Syne pale like only lily;
She sank within my arms, and cried,
“Art thou my ain dear Willie?”
“By him who made yon sun and sky!
By whom true love’s regarded,
I am the man; and thus may still
True lovers be rewarded.

“The wars are o’er, and I’m come hame,
And find thee still true-hearted;
Tho’ poor in gear, we’re rich in love,
And mair we’se ne’er be parted.”
Quo’ she, “My grandsire left me gowd,
A mailen plenish’d fairly;
And come, my faithfu’ sodger lad,
Thou’rt welcome to it dearly!”

For gold the merchant ploughs the main,
The farmer ploughs the manor;
But glory is the sodger’s prize,
The sodger’s wealth is honor:
The brave poor sodger ne’er despise,
Nor count him as a stranger;
Remember he’s his country’s stay,
In day and hour of danger.

This ballad was written in honor of soldiers who fight in war. Each stanza has 8 lines, and has the rhyme scheme of a-b-c-b-a-b-c-b. There aren't many repetition in this poem. This poem tells a story of the soldier who has fought for his country in honor, and his return to his family.

HOW CAN I
-Daniel Yang
How can I feel pain,
when I have no injuries.
How can I feel pain,
when I have nothing but memories.

Oh how I miss the past
where you would annoy me
until I spill out at last
and tell you secrets under the tree

How can I feel anger,
when you did nothing wrong,
How can I feel anger,
when it was all my fault all along

Oh how I will hate the future
and all your gossips of me that I overheard,
because tomorrow, we will see each other,
and walk away without saying a word.

My Poem

Most Annoying Test in Highschool = M.A.T.H
by Daniel Yang

As I sit there with a pencil in my hand
I am lost in shame
I feel as though I am lost in a island,
because the only thing I could write on the paper is my name.

It’s the most annoying test in High school,
the test that can’t be aced,
for I am a mere fool
and the mistakes I will make won’t be able to be replaced.

I start with question one, the “easiest” one,
and feel as though its the end for me
The test has just begun
and I’m already guessing, hoping the answer is letter ‘b’

I somehow survive till the end,
feeling as though it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
Feeling like my semester grade will ascend,
from an C to an B.

The next day, I was expecting a good mark.
Maybe this is the day I finally beat the smartest kid in my class, Jeff;
But when I get my test back, my face went dark.
Great, it’s just another F.

Reflection
Personally I enjoyed writing the poem. The hardest part for me was making the rhyme scheme. It was very difficult to follow the a,b,a,b pattern, but at the end, I was very satisfied in the end with how it came out. This poem was easy to write because we had a wide range of poems to choose from.
